World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Is the Next Expansion?

7/4/2009 5:34:42 PM

Though we are still waiting for the release of WoW Patch 3.2, Blizzard has registered a trademark for the word "Cataclysm" on June 26th, causing speculation across the internet that is the new expansion for World of Warcraft. Early in this year, rumor went like an expansion names "call of storm" would be released at Blizzard in 2009. But since the new trademarking of the word "Cataclysm" came up, the next expansion may names "World of Warcraft:The Cataclysm". May be you are still busy with farming WoW gold, but there's something new defiantly is coming.

The trademark registrations for "Cataclysm" include computer games, online entertainment services and paper-based products. So there's another speculation that it could be the name of a brand-new game. Blizzard said nothing about it, and we don't know answer to the riddle. The name certainly fits into WoW's lore; the cataclysm refers to an historical occurrence called the Great Sundering, which basically split up the game world of Azeroth into several continents. In other words, Cataclysm is a really huge event in Warcraft history and might make for a cool game.

Let's have a brief review of WoW expansion first and second:
World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (aka TBC), the first expansion for World of Warcraft, was announced on October 28th, 2005 and released on January 16th, 2007 in North America, Europe, and Australia, February 2nd, 2007 in Korea, April 3rd, 2007 in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and September 6th, 2007 in mainland China. The main features include an increase of the level cap, the introduction of the blood elves and the draenei as playable races, and the addition of the world of Outland, along with many new zones, dungeons, items, quests, and monsters.

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (colloquially known as "WotLK" or "Wrath") is the second World of Warcraft expansion and was officially announced on August 3, 2007 at BlizzCon 2007. The majority of the expansion content takes place in Northrend and centers on the plans of the Lich King. Content highlights include the increase of the level cap from 70 to 80, the introduction of the death knight Hero class, and new PvP/World PvP content. No additional playable races were been added, though many new NPC races were featured.

Is Cataclysm the name of the third World of Warcraft expansion? Actually, there're more wild guesses come up, as "Cataclysm" could be anything. WoW players you may have your own bold speculation when you are tied of earning WoW gold. But we have to wait and see till Blizzard kicks it off someday, and we will have a big surprise!
